Community Technology Centers

Why a CTC?

The "digital divide" doesn't figure as prominently in headlines as it used to. But in many neighborhoods across the country, it remains a very real obstacle to full participation in an increasingly electronics-based world.

U.S. Census Bureau data tell us that even now - 15 years after the term "digital divide" first came into common usage - roughly a third of Hispanic, African-American, and American Indian/Native Alaskan households have no internet usage. Only about four in 10 persons earning less than $20,000 per year reported accessing the internet in the past week, as compared to 94% of persons earning $100,000 or more. The difference by education level is even more stark: 95% of college graduates accessed the internet, in comparison to only one-third of those who had not graduated from high school. In contrast, the figures for television viewing varied only slightly - 91% to 94% - regardless of education and income.

Neighborhood-based Community Technology Centers (CTCs) are one way to bridge this digital divide.
